Upward Spirals

I can always predict which businesses will win and which will lose... by checking just one thing.
It’s almost creepy how well this works.
You can call me a business psychic. An oracle, if you will.
So you've heard about downward spirals right?
Guy feels stressed at work.
Doesn’t know how to deal with the stress.
Has a stiff drink to take off the edge.
Wakes up feeling worse the next day.
Finds it even harder to deal with the stress.
Takes that same stiff drink but earlier in the day this time.
Before you know it his breakfast is half a bottle of scotch.
Downward spiral things...
It’s easy to slip into that.
Life can grind you down.
It’s a good idea to have people around you who can call you out if you’re sliding into self-destructive behaviour.
Friends, family, a partner.
If you don’t have that support structure in place… it usually doesn't end well.
Look at any dictator ever.
There's a rise to power, no one's there to oppose them, they start making dumber and dumber decisions and eventually... they end up spiralling downwards.
Usually ends with them losing power... and their life.
Business is the exact same thing.
(Well, almost. You usually don't lose your life if you fail. But the idea still holds.)
Ask a business owner a couple of questions - and within a few minutes you'll know if he’s in an upward or downward spiral.
There’s no neutral here.
It might be going down at a glacial pace, but if nothing's happening the business is still sinking downwards.
Because gravity's real.
Show me a business owner who's content with the status quo, doesn’t have anyone to bounce ideas off and doesn’t try anything new because: "it's probably not going to work in my business anyway" - and I’ll show you a business that won't make it.
Show me a business owner who consistently checks the numbers, tries new things every week, and doesn't stop pushing forward - and I’ll show you a business owner who will make it.
They're going to win.
It’s inevitable.
Winning isn’t hard.
It’s just hard work.
But I promise you it feels way better to be in that upward spiral than it does being in a downward one.
